Don K. Ranatunga M.D., 87, of Duncansville, passed away early Friday morning at home after a lengthy illness. He was born in Sri Lanka, a son of the late Don Simon Ranatunga and Sarliyana (Wijewikrama) Ranatunga.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Malini Ranatunga; three children: Dilrini of San Francisco, Calif.; Nishanthi, New York, N.Y. and Nishantha, married to Wallis, of London, England.
He was a graduate of The Medical School of Columbo, Sri Lanka. After graduation he practiced medicine for eight years in Sri Lanka. In 1971 he migrated to the United States to advance his medical career. He completed his internship at Pawtucket Memorial Hospital in Rhode Island, a pathology residency in Monmouth Medical Center in New Jersey and an anesthesiology residency at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh. He then went on to join the staff at Altoona Hospital where he was an emergency medical physician.
His family was the love of his life. He was a very energetic person with various hobbies, one of which was an avid interest in cultivating orchids. The Oncidiums, Phelonopsis and Papiopedilums brought him great pleasure when they bloomed!
