Obituary for Donald J. Mattern

Donald J. Mattern, 80, Hollidaysburg, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday.

He was born in Hollidaysburg, son of the late Clayton J. and Anna Elizabeth Mattern. He married the love of his life, his late wife, Gloria Jean Shinafelt, who preceded him in death on Jan. 17, 2014.

Surviving are two daughters: Cynthia Kruester of Harrisburg and Crystal Wilson of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a son, Ricky Mattern of Cadiz, Ky.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Linda Foster; two brothers: Kenneth and Clayton “Allen”; and his friend, Karen Stevens.

Donald was a graduate of Hollidaysburg Area High School and would go on to serve his country by enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a mechanic for Stroehmann’s Bakery for 25 years before his retirement.

He was a member of the Canoe Creek United Methodist Church, Cesare Battisti and the Newburg Fire Association.

In his spare time, Donald enjoyed hunting, fishing and eating at the Old Canal Inn.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2019, at the Canoe Creek United Methodist Church, Pastor Gordon Trimer officiating. Arrangements are by The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Donald’s name may be made to the PA Fish and Game Commission.
