Dr. Ralph C. Macek, 78, former long-term resident of Hollidaysburg, passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019, with his wife and daughters by his side.
Ralph was born in Roaring Spring, the son of the late Kathryn (Garber) Macek and Rudolph Macek. On Nov. 3, 1968, he married his wife, Barbara, and they recently shared their 51st wedding anniversary.
In addition to his loving wife, Barbara, surviving are daughters: Courtney Watson (Vern) and Julie Tyson (Bill); his grandchildren: Benjamin and Sophie Watson; his sister, Barbara Kemp (Neil); his brother, C. Richard Macek (Anne); and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his youngest sister, Janie Humphries.
Ralph was a 1958 graduate of Mercersburg Academy, a 1962 graduate of Allegheny College Meadville, and a 1966 graduate of Temple University School of Medicine. Several months after completing his internship at Altoona Hospital in 1967, Dr. Macek went on to serve as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, and was deployed to the Republic of Vietnam from October 1967 through October 1968. He cared for wounded U.S. troops, as well as Vietnamese military and civilians, at the Twelfth Evacuation Hospital in Chu Chi. He also volunteered at medical clinics in the town of Chu Chi, caring for local Vietnamese civilians. His last several months of deployment were in An Khe Province as a field doctor. He received the Bronze Star for meritorious service. He completed his Army service at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland in September 1969.
Dr. Macek then joined Dr. John Sheedy in private practice for over 20 years prior to their joining Blair Medical Associates, from which Dr. Macek retired in January 2007. Dr. Macek was a board-certified family physician and a diplomate in the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was a dedicated physician and loved caring for his patients. During his 38 years of practice, Dr. Macek served on numerous committees including Altoona Hospital's Board of Trustees, the Family Practice Peer Review Committee and the Ethics Committee. He served as an instructor in the Family Practice Residency program.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hollidaysburg. Photography, tennis, model trains and golf were his favorite pastimes. He loved Wednesday night tennis and beer with his buddies afterward. He treasured time spent with family and friends. He adored his wife Barbara and they shared the love, joy, and pride of raising their daughters and cherished the fun times spent with grandchildren Ben and Sophie.
Ralph was a caring, kind soul loved by us all.
Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019, at the Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park, where a funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2019.
