Gunter Hermann Calzaferri

Gunter Hermann Calzaferri, 82, Duncansville, passed away Saturday at UPMC Altoona, surrounded by his family after a brief illness.

He was born in Frankfurt, Germany, son of Hermann and Magarete (Grunewald) Calzaferri.

Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Jerilynn (Wagner) Calzaferri; a daughter, Gina Calzaferri (Bryan Kunitsky); a sister, Lia (Calzaferri) Selbach of Zittenfelden, Germany; step-children: Becky (Holland) Snyder (Matthew Snyder) and Donald Holland (Tracy Holland); grandchildren: Matthew Snyder (Harley Snyder), Sydney Snyder and Donald Holland Jr.; and great-grandchildren: Sadie Snyder, unborn baby girl Snyder and Camden Holland.

Gunter survived WWII to become a renowned track cyclist on the German National Team. He immigrated to the United States in 1958, and was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army. A dedicated employee of the F.L. Smithe Machine Co., Gunter moved with the company from New York City to Duncansville and served the company for over 43 years until his retirement in 2002.

He was well known as a craftsman with a passion for woodworking, for his storytelling and most of all, for his love and kindness.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park.
