Herbert Gene Hostler, 83, of Slidell, La., passed away peacefully on Tuesday surrounded by family. He was born in Altoona, where he also grew up.
He was the loving father of Deborah A. Stringer and husband, Darren, of Slidell, La. and Cheryl L. Quinn and husband, Don, of Purvis, Miss.; and the grandfather of six grandchildren: David A. Olson, Andrew R. Quinn, Destiny D. Gallo, Jeremy S. Stringer, Matthew P. Stringer and Kaitlyn E. Stringer; and five great-grandchildren: Blake D. Gibson, Dexter M. Aguirie, Donovan A. Olson, Ella J. Olson and Joshua J. Olson.
Herbert was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary Jane Hostler; his parents, Herbert J. Hostler and Helen R. Hostler; and a sister, Dolores R. Weber.
He attended Penn State University, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He was a true Nittany Lions Fan! “We are!!” During his career, he worked on the Minuteman ICBM, Apollo Space Program, Surface Effect Ship, Navy LCAC Landing Craft Space Shuttle and Constellation Space Programs.
Family meant everything to him. He was an inspiring role model as well as an amazing husband, father, and “Pappy” to all! He enjoyed taking many family trips. He loved exploring history, hiking, swimming, scuba diving, riding his motorcycle and shooting his guns. He made a point of going to all of his grandkids games and competitions. He was a selfless man, always putting others first.
Herbert was a dedicated member of the Slidell BPOE Elks Lodge since 1966. “Elkdom” was a true passion of his. He served in local, state and national capacities including: Exalter Ruler for five terms, District Deputy GER, State President, Grand Lodge Ritual Committeeman, Hoop Shoot, Scholarship and Pool Chairman, Red Cross WSI and Lifeguard Instructor. He loved sharing his knowledge and experience with all.
Family and friends are invited for a time of visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 19, 2021, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., 108 Alto-Reste Park, Altoona PA 16601. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m.
