Obituary for Joanne Benson

Joanne Benson, 87, of Altoona, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2023, at her home.

She was born on March 21, 1935, in Altoona; a daughter of the late Forest and Jeanette (Williams) Bartholomew. On January 8, 1954, she married the love of her life, William “Bill” Benson who preceded her in death on December 6, 2015.

Joanne was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hollidaysburg.

She was a 1953 graduate from Altoona High School. Throughout the years, she worked with children at the Hollidaysburg YMCA and Lakemont Elementary School. Joanne had a deep love for Music. She was the Choir director at Lakemont United Methodist Church for many years.

Joanne was a huge animal lover, she adored her two cats which provided great company and comfort over the years. She also enjoyed planting flowers. She loved having her yard filled with beautiful flowers that she planted every year.

She was a devoted wife, proud mother, and loving grandmother. She cherished the time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Becoming a grandmother brought so much joy to her life.

Surviving are her four sons, Brad (Lisa) of Hillsboro, NJ, Todd (Pam) of Crownsville, MD, Shawn (Kathy) of Herndon, VA and Troy (Jeryl) of Gibsonia, PA; nine grandchildren; Tyler, Clint, Destini, Travis, McCaul, Thadeus, Seth, Mathias, and Faith; seven great grandchildren, Cayson, Madilynn, Tanner, Brooks, Nash, Aria, and River. She is also survived by one aunt, Jane Owens and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 6-8pm on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at the First United Methodist Church, 801 Allegheny St., Hollidaysburg, PA. The Funeral Service will be held at 11am on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at the First United Methodist Church, Hollidaysburg with Pastor John Godissart and Pastor Paul Bottenfield officiating. Interment will be private at Alto Reste Park, Altoona.

A special thank you to the wonderful ladies that cared for Joanne the past few years. The family is forever grateful and because of their care, kindness and love, Joanne’s wish to stay in her home was made possible.
