John W. Snyder, age 87, of Altoona passed away peacefully at home Saturday following an extended illness.

John was born in Altoona, son of the late Raymond K. and Sara (France) Snyder. He married Louella Mae Mattern on Aug. 17, 1963 at First United Methodist Church, Altoona. She preceded him in death on June 8, 2008. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Robert F. Snyder.

He is survived by his sisters-in-law; Joan Snyder of Boca Raton, Fla., and Margery Nace of Butler; three daughters: Susan (Ron) Rees of Amherst, N.H., Judy (Anthony) Gale of Annapolis, Md., and Melissa Bytner of Monroeville; and three grandchildren: Hannah and Spencer Rees of Amherst, N.H., and Ryan Kuzupas of Altoona.

John was a member of First United Methodist Church and is currently a member of Jaggard First United Methodist Church and participated in the church choirs.

John was active in the Masonic organizations. He was a member of the ALASKA Chapter Order of Demolay, Hiram Lodge #616, Scottish Rite Freemasonry, was commander of the Jaffa Shrine Legion of Honor in 1968, and Grand Tall Cedar of Chief Logan Forest #131 in 1993.

John received his public education from AASD and graduated in 1952. He attended Indiana State Teachers College, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and an elementary principal certificate in 1956. He has been a member of the Gamma Pi chapter of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity since 1953, serving a semester as chapter president. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1956-58. He obtained a master’s degree in education with advanced study in education administration from Penn State University in 1962. He was employed in the Altoona Area School District as an elementary teacher for 36 years, retiring in 1992. He had a positive impact on the lives of students, many of whom have approached him over the years to thank him and express their appreciation. He also worked after retirement as a courier for Mid State bank and Omega bank, as well as Carmike Cinema.

He was a man of great faith, patience, and caring and will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.

All services will be privately held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by The Good Funeral Home Inc. Interment with military honors will take place in Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.

I so lovingly remember our summer vacations in Altoona. Uncle Jack was always so positive and engaged even when I was his little niece and far into my adulthood. I think my mom even had a little crush on him-who could blame her?! Such a sweet man and he was so loved by all of you. And I'm sure he knew it. I am very sorry for the loss of your father!! I however can't help but smile thinking of my conversations with him (At Cracker Barrel) . I can still see.him walking in with his hat on and sitting down. He was very proud of you girls!!
