Obituary for Margaret C. Van Scoyoc

Margaret C. Van Scoyoc, age 100, of Altoona, died peacefully in her home on January 4, 2023 following a brief illness. She was born in Altoona on July 16, 1922, the only child of Fred L. and Helen (Wilson) Carn. She married Richard S. Van Scoyoc on June 23, 1951 at Jaggard Memorial Methodist Church, Altoona. He preceded her in death on April 30, 2019. She is survived by a son, Timothy, with whom she resided, and several cousins.


Margaret graduated from Altoona High School in 1940 and Wilson College, Chambersburg, in 1944 with a major in Music and a minor in Mathematics. She received a Master’s Degree in Education from Penn State in 1950. She taught math at Roosevelt Junior High School for 13 years until the birth of her son. It was at Roosevelt that she met her husband, a fellow math teacher.


Margaret was a member of Christ Community United Methodist Church, formerly 58th Street United Methodist Church, where she served as organist and choir director for 30 years. An accomplished musician, she had previously played the organ in several other local churches, including 12 years at Simpson Methodist Church. She also was active in her church’s United Methodist Women circle, serving as president and later as treasurer for many years.


She belonged to Altoona Chapter, No. 290, Order of the Eastern Star, where she was recognized as an 80-year member in April, and the Blair County Historical Society. She was a member of the Blair County Branch of the American Association of University Women, the Altoona YWCA, and the local group of Church Women United until those organizations’ dissolution. She also served as an election poll worker in her local precinct.


Friends will be received from 2-5 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2023, at the Good Funeral Home, Inc., 108 Alto Reste Park, Altoona, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at Christ Community United Methodist Church, Roselawn Ave. and 58th Street, Altoona, where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Rebecca Holland officiating. Interment will be at Alto Reste Park, Altoona.
