Obituary for Patricia C. "Patty" Garner

June 7, 1939 – Apr. 11, 2023

Patricia C. Garner, 83, of Martinsburg, passed away Tuesday after an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, James M. and Laura M. (Merritts) Garner. She was also preceded in death by her brother, James D. Garner.

Surviving are: her two siblings, Bonnie Garner and David Garner and his wife, Gloria; her sister- in-law, Tanya Garner; nephews, James W., Justin and his wife, Cindy and Jarvis.

Patty graduated from Claysburg High School in 1957, and longed to become a nurse. She graduated from Altoona School of Nursing in 1960 and started working as an ICU nurse. After several years in Altoona, she decided to serve her country and travel the world, joining the United States Air Force. After 20 successful years in the military, she attained the rank of Major. She participated in the Vietnam War as a Flight Nurse. Patty had many assignments both abroad and in the U.S. After retirement, she moved back home to be close to family and friends.

She was the only female veteran to belong to the Claysburg Legion POST 522.

The family would like to thank the staff at Homewood at Martinsburg for their kindness and care during Patty’s residency.

There will be a public viewing from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Apr. 13, 2023, at the Good Funeral Home Inc., 108 Alto Reste Park, Altoona. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Apr. 14, 2023, at the funeral home with Pastor James Neatrour officiating. The Central PA Nurses Honor Guard will hold a memorial ceremony after the funeral. Interment will immediately follow at Alto Reste Park, with full Military Honors.
