Obituary for Robert J. "Bob" Mirenda

Following a brief illness, Robert J. “Bob” Mirenda, 77,Altoona, died Wednesday at UPMC Altoona with his wife, Helen and son, William at his side.

He was a son of the late Joseph and Josephine Fischli Mirenda. On April 25, 1964, he married Terry Smith, who preceded him in death on Sept. 18, 2015.

On Jan. 17, 2017, he married Helen L. Rhodes.

Surviving are his loving wife, Helen; his son, William (Jamie); his grandsons: Kristian and Korey; three granddaughters: Karleigh, Francesca and Alexia; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph; and his son, Robert Jr.

Robert honorably served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard from Nov. 2, 1960, to Oct. 30, 1964. He was employed as a core driller by PennDOT in 1964 and retired in 1996. He had many additional jobs including auto and motorcycle mechanic. From 1984 to March 2020, he was employed as the maintenance and door man at the Pleasant Valley Recreation Center and 4D’s Lounge, a job he highly enjoyed. He was a member of the St. Rose of Lima parish.

An avid motorcyclist, he enjoyed spending time riding his motorcycle around the area. Most mornings one could find him enjoying coffee with his friends at Dunkin’ Donuts. Robert loved his family and his large circle of friends. He was a huge dog lover and during the past few months he spent a great deal of time with his dog, Jimmy Z. He was a friend to many and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no visitation. A private Mass at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church will be celebrated at the convenience of Robert’s family. A celebration of his life will occur at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, at Robert’s and the family’s request, contributions be made to Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, 1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona, PA 16602 or online at centralpahumane.org in Robert’s memory.

Interment will be at Alto-Reste Cemetery.
