Sarah Blanche Stuver, 93, Hollidaysburg, passed away Sunday after a brief illness
She was born in Bedford, daughter of Fred and Nellie Jane (Bailey) Hockenbury.
She is survived by her eldest son, Rodney (Patti Jo) of Concord, N.C.; her youngest daughter, Susan (Jeremy Farleman) of Hollidaysburg; a daughter-in-law, Patty (Felmlee) of Lancaster; a brother, John Hockenbury of Hollidaysburg; six grandchildren: Todd of Concord, N.C., Russell of Seattle, Wash., Benjamin of Fairbanks, Alaska, Sara Jo (Benjamin Walton) and Kele Stuver-Pacheco, all of Kirkland, Wash., and Kyle Stuver-Pacheco (Sheena Wilkinson) of Duncansville, and their four children, Khiry, Amyiah, Peightyn and Selena.
She was predeceased by her parents; her eldest brother, Ray; youngest brother, Charley; her son, Ricky Jay; her daughter, Kathleen Joyce; and longtime friend, Elwood Carlson.
Sarah graduated from Bedford High School in 1944 and she married Herbert Ned Stuver in 1944 and they divorced in 1985. Sarah spent her early years assisting her husband Herb in researching and developing their numerous businesses; a coffee shop in Somerset; three Kentucky Fried Chicken locations in Altoona; Arthur Treachers in Altoona, Chambersburg and Breezewood; Dunkin Donuts and then Arby's of Breezewood; The Keg and Butcher Block Steak House; Herb's Burgers; Hollywood Video; and New York City Shoes, all of Altoona.
Sarah transferred her membership in December 1983 to the Hollidaysburg Church of the Brethren and had been a very active member; having served as Deacon, a member of the church board and various committees. She was a member of the Disciple's Sunday School Class and designed the altar flowers for about 13 years.
The 60s and 70s included summers at the cottage on "the river" at Raystown with friends; waterskiing; playing cards; and picnicking. She enjoyed winters at Blue Knob, in Colorado or Utah, snow skiing. Sarah's was a member of the weekly bridge club at Park Hills for many years. She loved playing a variety of games and cards and was especially fond of "Hand & Foot." Often a winner, she was proud of the fact that she could "hold her own" in word games against the "college graduates!" She was always there for her grandchildren-to babysit, attend activities, visit Horseshoe Curve, play in the creek and share in the adventures through stories and photos.
Sarah loved traveling. She traveled to 48 states, and several countries including Hawaii, Canada, Central Europe, the British Isles, Jamaica, Mexico, Africa and Peru. England was her favorite destination-maybe that's due to her 51% English, Welsh and NW European ethnicity!
She was an active member of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club of Hollidaysburg, serving four terms as President. Sarah also served as District VI Director and held numerous positions on the district board. She created a newsletter, "The Happy Spader" in 1979 for her local club and was editor during most of those years.
Sarah was a national and state Life garden club member and since 1974, she served as chairman of various committees on the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania Board plus two terms as State Corresponding Secretary and Financial Secretary. Sarah served eight years on the Central Atlantic Board and four years on the National Garden Club Inc. (NGC) Board. She received two GCFP Presidential Citations and one National Presidential Citation. Sarah also received the District VI top awards: Lady Bug and Mushroom Awards.
Sarah was a master Flower Show judge, holding membership in the Pittsburgh Area Judges Council, Laurel Highland Judges Council and Ohio Judges Council. She was also a member of the Designers Guild of Greensburg, Creative Flower Arrangers of Pittsburgh, Creative Flower Arrangers of the Americas, National Flower Arrangers and World Association of Flower Arrangers (WAFA.) Sarah attended the World Association Flower Show in South Africa in 1999 and several of Sarah's designs were published in the Vision of Beauty calendar published by NGC and one of her miniature designs was included in the WAFA USA book flower arranging, The American Way.
Sarah's love of gardening soon became driven to grow plants and flowers that she could use in her creative flower designs. She gave numerous programs on flower design, table designs and interpreted flower show schedules for many Garden Clubs across the state. Sarah later focused her passion to creative miniature flower designs. Many flower show judges respected Sarah's creative eye and loved to hear her opinion on how to improve their own designs.
Sarah was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and friend. She had a kind heart, beautiful smile and had a "sunny disposition with very few clouds." She was creative and talented in numerous areas; making mud pies as a child, charcoal drawings as a teen and oil paintings as a young mother. She loved holiday crafts and making her own Christmas cards, sewing, baking and entertaining. Recently, she turned to writing poetry about family pets and stories of her life. Tea parties with her great-grandchildren were becoming a frequent event as well.
Family and friends will be received from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, March 4, 2020, at Hollidaysburg Church of the Brethren, 1028 Penn St., Hollidaysburg, the Rev. Connie Maclay officiating. Interment will take place in Alto-Reste Park. Arrangements are by The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park.
