Thomas Jay Mitchell
May 8, 1928 – July 6, 2020
Thomas Jay Mitchell, 92, of Hollidaysburg, went home to be with the Lord after an extended illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late William E. and Estella (Garner) Mitchell. Tom was the sixth of eight children.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Peggy (Parker) Mitchell; four sons: David and wife, Nancy, of Medford, N.J., Steve and wife, Karen, of Imperial, Mo., Thomas of Altoona, and Clifford and wife, Jennifer, of Hollidaysburg; three daughters: Mary Ann Maidl and husband, Dan, of Douglas, Wy., Teresa Davis of Pittsville, Md., and Lori Weston and husband, Bob, of Irwin; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Langham of Warrenton, Va.; and two devoted cousins: Kathie and Alice Richardson.
He was preceded in death by his three brothers: Bill, Dick and Ed; and three sisters: Betty Zimmerer, Dorothy Beman and Dolores Mitchell.
Thomas graduated from Altoona High School in 1946 and went on to college at Bucknell University. He worked in construction and insurance sales.
He was a member of Powellville United Methodist Church in Maryland and currently became a member of Christ Community United Methodist Church in Altoona.
Tom enjoyed singing in the choir. He was an honorary member of Ruritan and spent many years serving on the board of directors. He had a serious weakness for pie and ice cream and loved football, especially Penn State and his Steelers.
If you were lucky enough to have Tom as your friend, you had a friend for life. Some may even have the joy of knowing him as “Santa.” He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be deeply missed.
Family and friends will be received from 6 to 8p.m. Friday, July 10, 2020, and from 9 until the 10 a.m. funeral service Saturday, July 11, 2020, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park, the Rev. Carol Gathagan officiating. Interment will take place in Alto-Reste Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
