Mary Jane Downing, 92, a lifelong resident of Altoona, passed away Monday at UPMC Altoona, after an extended illness.
She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late J.E. Kenneth and Helen V. (Settlemyer) Burley. On July 23, 1947, she married Paul S. Downing in Cumberland, Md., and he preceded her in death on April 14, 2001.
Surviving are three children: Stephen P. (MaryAnn) Downing and Sharon D. (Fred) Walters, both of Altoona, and Debra K. (Mike) McClellan of Bellwood; five grandchildren: Lisa (Russ) Moyer of Altoona, Michael (Heather) McClellan of Bellwood, Tracie (Brandon) Linton of Annapolis, Md., Karrie (Corey) Parker of Round Hill, Va. and Shawna (Jarod) Koons of Dauphin, Pa.; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Miss. Judith K. Burley; and two brothers: William R. Burley and Thomas E. Burley. She was the last of her immediate family.
Mary Jane was a 1944 graduate of Altoona High School. She retired from Hill’s Department Store, and during WWII, she worked at Glen L. Martin Aircraft as a secretary.
She enjoyed reading, watching TV, and spending time with her family. Mary Jane also enjoyed camping at Glendale with her husband and family, and she spent many summers enjoying the beach in Ocean City, Md.
There will be a private service at the convenience of the family. Interment will be at Presbyterian Cemetery, Hollidaysburg. Arrangements are by The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park Cemetery
