Annette M. Dobson, 90, Altoona, peacefully passed away Friday from complications of Alzheimer's disease, in her home, with her children at her side.
She was born Antionette M. Rogal in the village of Allport, Cambria County, daughter of John Rogal and Antionette Presalowicz (Presloid), both Polish immigrants to the United States, who lived most of their lives in Hastings. Annette married Richard T. Dobson on Jan. 17, 1953. She and her husband lived in Altoona, where they had four children. Her husband preceded her in death on March 29, 2011, after 58 years of marriage.
Surviving are four children: Thomas R. Dobson and his wife, Beverly, of Mercer, Jean D. Johnstone and her husband, Bruce, of Altoona, Ann D. Mormak and her companion, Stanley Good, of Sugarloaf and Richard K. Dobson of Altoona; six grandchildren: Sarah Johnstone (Marc Palmer) of Wyncote, Kelli Johnstone of Estes Park, Colo., Daniel Mormak (Dawn) of Jacksonville, Fla., Matthew Mormak (Haley) of Hatboro, Andrew Dobson of Reading, Mass., and John Dobson of Chicago, Ill.; and a great-grandson: Chase Mormak of Jacksonville, Fla.
Annette was the last surviving member of a family of sixteen children. To them she was known as "Tootsie."
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Antionette of Hastings; nine brothers: Joseph Rogal of Spangler, Anthony "Dick" Rogal of Hastings, John "Gippy" Rogal of Chester, Walter Rogal of Hastings, Louis Rogal of Hastings, Carl Rogal of Hastings, Blair Rogal of Chester, Albert "Tucker" Rogal of Akron, Ohio, and Chester Rogal of Akron, Ohio; six sisters: Veronica "Irene" Yanner of Akron, Ohio, Blanche Rogal of Hastings, Mary Shall of Hastings, Eva Rogal of Hastings, Henrietta "Henny" Wilson of Akron, Ohio, and Regina "Jeanne" Reeves of Akron, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
Annette was a graduate of Hastings High School and she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in 1950. She was employed at the Cresson TB Sanitarium, where she met her future husband who was a patient there. She also worked at French Hospital in New York City. Later in life, Annette worked at Garvey Manor, Hollidaysburg, and did private duty nursing.
Annette was active in civic organizations and social causes during her life. She was a former member of the Altoona Women's Club. She was active in counseling of sexual assault victims. She was also active in providing assistance and services for mentally disabled individuals.
It was often said of Annette that she was one of the sweetest persons you will ever meet. She was a kind and caring person with a heart of gold. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by those who knew her. May she rest in peace.
Family will receive friends from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, and from noon until the 1 p.m. funeral service Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, Monsignor Robert Mazur, Celebrant. Committal will be held in Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
